MAASAI
OSRICH FARM TOUR KITENGELA -
FULL DAY
|

Masai ostrich farm and resort is located
some 30 minutes from the city centre.
Just
half an hours drive from the city centre
and 10 minutes from the Kitengela-Namanga
highway is the Maasai Ostrich farm. Maasai
Ostrich Farm which is around 37 kilometers
from Nairobi. Sitting on almost 200 acres,
the farm has dozens of ostriches that will
leave you and your family amazed.
Boasting
two types of ostriches [ Maasai and Somali
Ostriches ] you will not only get to tour
the farm but you can also let the children
ride them too. It is fun, especially for the
courageous ones. It also gives a lovely picture
opportunity.
The
tour of the farm takes almost half an hour
depending on how inquisitive you are and what
picture opportunities you will get out of
your tour. It is very interesting seeing ostriches
in different stages of growth and sizes. Ostrich
products are available for sale.
An
ostrich is slaughtered at 8 months because
the quality and taste of its meat is achieved
during that period of growth. There is also
the opportunity to view and hand-feed the
ostriches, and if the weather is good, you
can even take an ostrich ride.
Visit
Masai ostrich farm day tour can be done in
the morning or the afternoon and can include
a lunch at their restaurant with their specialty
ostrich grilled or fried meats.
The
ostrich farm is located some 45 km outside
Nairobi to the south in the Athi plains. This
is a great place to go and ride an ostrich
or have it for lunch. The workers here will
help you up on the ostrich back and you will
have a controlled ride around the shed.
The
workers have to hold on to the bird as there
are no saddles to secure you on its back.
Ostriches have also been known to have a mind
of their own once mounted and you can easily
find yourself on the dust if the handlers
were to let go.
There
is also a weight limit of 75 kgs and below.
Sorry if you weigh above that, you wont
be have a ride on the birds. They dont
want to hurt their birds while offering the
rides.
The
Masai ostrich farm day trip & ostrich
lunch resort offers standard, deluxe and royal
rooms and they have a fully fledged swimming
pool and a play area for kids. Its a
quiet place away from all the noise in town
and a great place to hold corporate retreats,
workshops, seminars and team building trips.

Founded
in 1991 initially as a ranch house, the resort
offers luxury accommodation with five spacious
en suite double rooms, tastefully furnished
and ten tents with both double and single
beds.
Maasai
Ostrich Resort is located 45 km's from Nairobi
on the Athi River/kitengela plains. One hour
drive from the city centre and seven Kilometers
off Namanga road.
Beautiful
gardens of mixed wild and exotic plants and
a green manicured lawn surround the large
American style ranch house. Over time, the
resort has become a haven of peace for business
meetings and a popular ideal spot for family
outings.
Sitting
on almost 200 acres, the farm has dozens of
ostriches that will leave you and your family
amazed.
The
road from the highway is rough, but you get
a lovely panoramic view of the Kitengela Conservation
Area, with a wide swathe of plains playing
out.
Boasting
two types of ostriches, Maasai and Somali,
you will not only get to tour the farm but
you can also let the children ride them too.
It is fun, especially for the courageous ones.
It also gives a lovely picture opportunity.
The
tour of the farm takes almost half an hour
depending on how inquisitive you or the children
are, and what picture opportunities you will
get out of your tour. It is very interesting
seeing the animals in different stages of
growth and sizes.
The
two types of ostriches are differentiated
by the colour of their legs and necks; the
Maasai ostrich is red thighs while its Somali
counterpart is blue.
Another
interesting bit about this farm is that it
is one of the few establishments that are
allowed to sell ostrich meat (which is a restricted
game meat) within its establishment. They
also supply it outside the ranch and sell
the meat, feathers and skin.
Activities
The
ostriches are trained to be ridden and over
the weekends, especially on Sundays, there
are ostrich races, another must watch activity.
There are specially trained jockeys who race
these animals.
On
a good day, you will be able to spot a few
animals like zebras, giraffes, antelopes and
even buffaloes at the Kitengela Conservation
Area.
The
farm also offers accommodation but it is its
carefully manicured grounds that stand out.
There is a swimming pool and beyond it is
a hedge where the ostrich enclosures are.
The
farm also serves an ostrich dish but it is
pretty expensive. You will part with not less
than Sh1,000 for a steak. The menus are interesting
and you are certain to find an ostrich dish
that suits your taste.
Ostrich
Riding
People
from all walks of life continue to experience
this giant sized bird and believe you me,
your friends will never believe that you actually
had the courage to do something completely
different.
